Meet Dr. Sawhney

A Raleigh native, Dr. Anita Sawhney became interested in dentistry as a teenager, when she received orthodontic treatment at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Dentistry. Since then, dentistry has proven to be a fairly perfect profession for Dr. Sawhney. “I like taking care of people, improving their smiles and their confidence, and taking them out of discomfort and pain,” Dr. Sawhney explains.

Dr. Sawhney opened her first family dentistry practice in Raleigh in 1994 after graduating from the UNC School of Dentistry and completing her residency in Jacksonville, Florida, through the University of Florida. In addition to being a member of the ADA, Dr Sawhney serves as a board member for the Raleigh Wake County Dental Society and UNC Dental Alumni Association. She is serving as 2016 president of RWCDS.

In 2013, Dr Sawhney was named a fellow in the International College of Dentists. She was inducted into this honorary organization at the ADA meeting in New Orleans. Please click here for more information

During dental school, Dr. Sawhney was one of the first students to participate in The UNC Dental Mexico Project. As part of this project, she provided volunteer dental services at an orphanage in Mexico. Dr. Sawhney has also volunteered on a fully equipped “dental office bus” that travels throughout North Carolina.

For several years after starting her practice, Dr. Sawhney was a guest lecturer at the UNC School of Dentistry, where she spoke to students about the experience of being a new dentist. She has also served as an adjunct faculty member at the dental school.

Although she has traveled extensively, Dr. Sawhney says Raleigh is still her favorite place to be. Dr. Sawhney lives in Raleigh with her husband, Greg, and daughter, Sophie. In her spare time, she enjoys swimming, piano, tennis, cooking and reading.
